Mode of Transportation

Anyone who's been around us since Thanksgiving has probably heard our moaning about Phillip's red beauty: (no this isn't his...it just looks like it)

Don't get me wrong. I feel completly blessed to live in a day and age when we can own two vehicles, much less have any vehicle. That being said, Phillip's car has been sick since Thanksgiving weekend and we've been down to one car on-and-off since. At the first I was more willing to get up at O'dark thirty to get ready for work hours before I had to be there. I have gotten more and more grumpy since then. Poor Phillip has lived with my moaning for quite awhile.
Many people said "Well, just get a new one." We had just finished paying off Phillip's car, so technically we should be fine to just buy a new one, however I've been reluctant to do so. My car is almost paid off and I'd like to try to get out of debt as the Prophet has asked us to. I'd at least like to get one of our "debt" items paid off before we add on a new car (and the insurance rates that come with it).
Well, my car is almost paid off now and I'm sure you can imagine our excitment when on the news this morning they announced GM is recalling some of their cars, Phillips being one of them. Of course it wasn't exciting to hear that his car REALLY could have blown up, but we were already imagining the pretty recall check we would have to put as a down payment on the new dcar.

Yeah, that only lasted so long. Then we read the fine print and realized that they "will remove the spark plug wire retention channel at the front of engine and install two new spark plug wire retainers. The quick fix is free. "
Oh well, it's just another reason for us to get rid of the red beauty and get Phillip a new car. I'm voting on a Jeep Cherokee (one of the nicer ones) since that's what he wants. Really we want something with low mileage, not so high price and okay to great mileage...and of course enough room for the family to come.
What's everyone's votes on cars?

I vote for a "new" car that runs good. :-)

New cars are fun...but if you're looking to save money I wouldn't recommend the jeep. That's what I bought and it drinks gas like there is NO tomorrow. It's a sad situation actually.

Get a Toyota or Honda. That's my recommendation. They have been great for our family.

I think you may already know my feelings on the subject but I'll share anyway, just in case the memory is lapsing.
Don't get a Jeep Cherokee, they are not cheap to fix and they are a huge pain to fix. The harder they are to fix, the more labor you pay.
Kevin is totally willing and able to hook you up or help you out with the best deal possible at Carmax.
Hondas and Toyotas are among my personal faves. PLUS, Kevin specializes in Toyotas. Not that you have to use him as your repair guy, it's so just in case you need him, you'll find that it's a benefit. :-)
Whatever Kevin recommends is what I would do if I were you. Trust me, he KNOWS from experience and I know from watching his experience. You will ALWAYS save money by listening to his advice. You'll find that to be true by looking at our own old cars. :-)

We vote for a minivan! While once thought to be the end of all social coolness, we now ride in blissful delight and comfort! ;)

Kristin - LOL I've said for awhile now that my next car will only be when I need to buy a minivan. We'll see about that.
